Diabetes Update IV

Eyesight

Yesterday I had my diabetic eye exam. FYI – This requires a visit to either an optometrist or an ophthalmologist. I scheduled it with my regular annual eye exam with my optometrist. When classed as a diabetic eye exam, they bill your regular insurance instead of your vision insurance. Once the medical is resolved, they then bill your vision insurance.

Before I got my blood glucose stabilized, I had issues with my vision. I had to move windows off my laptop screen to my monitor to read them. But that cleared up once my glucose was under control.

Wonderfully, my actual vision improved since my last eye exam in October, 2020! My glucose had started to spike back then. So don’t mess around. Untreated, high blood glucose leads to blindness.

A1C

My A1C is still considered in the pre-diabetes range. I am still to maintain a healthy diet (DUH!) and take the once a week injection.

I’m still figuring out my diet and what foods and timing of meals causes spikes. I think my lowest fasting blood glucose while on insulin was in the upper 80’s. I never had a crash. I did feel a bit wobbly when it got that low.

The onset of cold weather here in Michigan greatly impacts my desire to go outside, as I really don’t like the cold. This makes an inside exercise routine important. Now that COVID-19 is getting better, I will consider resuming my weekend mall walking routine. I also got my COVID-19 booster. I forgot my vaccination card, so now I have a second card showing all three injections.

Here is my A1C from the tests during in-office visits:

AIC Standard Range5/13/218/13/2111/18/21
Hgb A1C4.4 – 5.6 %14.0 A6.2 A5.9 A
Only 0.3% from the range of pre-diabetes!

My last A1C before my diagnosis:

NameStandard Range11/20/20
Est Avg Glucosemg/dL166
Hgb A1C4.4 – 5.6 %7.4 H
This was in the diabetes range & I should have worked harder to avoid it going out of control.
As per the CDC & ADA:
  • Pre-diabetes is an A1C of 5.7 to 6.4.
  • Diabetes is an A1C of 6.5 and above.
