First Day Home

Monday, August 24, 2020 – POSTED: August 27, 2020

I was released from the hospital about Noon on Monday, and was home by about 12:30.

Getting in my truck was fun. Just before the pandemic, I bought my first pickup, a Dodge Ram 1500. It doesn’t have running boards, so it’s a big stretch to get in. I had my son bring a step ladder, and that was perfect for getting in. I think that was easier than trying to duck down into a car seat.

The bumps in the road were a bit annoying, but I persevered. My son helped me into the house and I easily handled the few stairs to get in the house. I went to the recliner and felt very relaxed. My granddaughter was a bit confused and concerned and knew not to hug my belly.

She was excited to go on a walk with me and dutifully moved all the sticks out of my path. Our block isn’t very big. At about the halfway point, I realized that I forgot to put my cellphone in my pocket. I’m thinking, “Great, just get home so Nikola doesn’t have to run for help.” It was 90 F and it was not a fun walk. But we made it.

I ate some beef broth and crackers, later I ate some chicken noodle soup and crackers. I’ve yet to have a bowel movement, but I have had some enormous farts.

I watched Never Ending Story, Snow White, and Onward with my granddaughter. Whether the anesthesia or thankfulness to be alive, I was tearing up at everything. That leveled out overnight.

I did go upstairs to check on my room and home office. I’ve worked from home for about 5 years. I did the full flight of stairs much more easily than expected.

I slept in the recliner downstairs. I was up several time in the night, but I slept a block of 3 hours and a block of 5 hours and felt rested at 8:30 AM.
